Staunton is a large town of about 25,000 people and it is the seat of Augusta County, the largest and possibly the most beautiful county in the Shenandoah Valley. Downtown Staunton is imminently walkable and is known as a cultural center — art, music, Shakespeare, architecture and history. Spend a couple of days in Staunton and you will know much more about what the Valley is and what it has been. Conveniently situated near I-81 and almost equidistant from Lexington, Charlottesville and Harrisonburg, Staunton makes a great base of operations for sightseeing in the upper Valley.
